Agricultural literacy involves sharing knowledge about food and farming, learning terms and concepts surrounding cultivation techniques, and adopting a broader approach that extends far beyond technical expertise.

The Benefits of Agricultural Literacy

Another purpose of agricultural literacy is to raise public awareness about farmers’ realities and livelihoods. It encourages citizens to get involved in agriculture and shines light on how these issues concern them.

The fact of the matter is that we all strive to eat healthier. We all dream of a society where parents prepare wholesome and nutritious meals for their children. However, people need to understand the ins and outs of farming issues if they want to make informed choices. Why is this? Knowledge is power—it helps us fully appreciate and value the reality in front of us.

The Cost of Ignorance

A lack of education about agriculture can gradually lead to devastating consequences. Nowadays, most people have no idea about the essential role farmers play. They do not know how difficult agriculture can be, as they no longer have farmers in their social network.

It has gotten to the point that we assume farmers will always be there, no matter the challenges. We take for granted that supermarket shelves will always be stocked, and this illusion leads to carelessness. This comes at a price: a society with little farming education will be oblivious to the risks and vulnerabilities weighing on the food system.
